Mortician board members step down amidst mounting pressure

Three members of Maryland’s State Board of Morticians and Funeral Directors, including the board’s president, resigned under pressure from the governor’s office following the closure of a troubled crematory facility in Charles County. The abrupt departures of Michele Kutta, Brandon Wylie, and Patrick Thompson from the executive committee of the board were prompted by Governor Wes Moore’s call for a “top to bottom review” of the board in the wake of issues reported at the Heaven Bound Cremation Services facility.

The review will be led by Charles Scheeler, a former federal prosecutor, and will assess the board’s structure and operations. The board, which oversees the state’s funeral industry, licenses, inspects, and disciplines funeral homes, morticians, and crematory operators. The Heaven Bound Cremation Services facility faced summary suspension of its license for improper handling of remains, including stacked bodies in cardboard boxes and decomposing remains.

This is not the first time the facility has faced issues, with past violations including improperly stored cremains and failures to meet probationary terms. The resignations and review are part of efforts to ensure the health and safety of Marylanders in the funeral industry.
