Tragic Drowning: Queens Man Found Dead in Maryland Reservoir
A tragic incident unfolded at Liberty Reservoir, near Baltimore, where Smith Veras, a 20-year-old man from Queens, was found dead after swimming with friends. Veras was last seen on Thursday after he and three friends jumped into the water, approximately 17 miles northwest of Baltimore. Witnesses reported him struggling midway while swimming to an island.
The discovery of Veras’ body on Saturday followed an extensive search operation by local rescue teams, later joined by state teams. The reservoir poses significant dangers, with depths ranging from 3 to 70 feet and extremely cold water in certain areas. Notably, swimming in the reservoir is prohibited due to these risks.
The Carroll County sheriff’s office stated they do not suspect foul play; however, the incident remains under investigation. They expressed their condolences to Veras’ family during this devastating time. This incident marks at least the third drowning in Liberty Reservoir since 2010, underscoring the potential hazards of the location.
As authorities continue to investigate, the community mourns the loss of a young life taken too soon.
