Maryland Hunters Record Similar Harvest During 2024 Deer Hunting Season Opener
During the 2024 deer hunting season opener in Maryland, hunters recorded a total harvest of 10,889 deer, which was very similar to last year’s total of 10,905 deer. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources reported that hunters were successful despite subfreezing temperatures and strong winds, with 4,947 antlered and 5,605 antlerless white-tailed deer, as well as 181 antlered and 156 antlerless sika deer harvested. The agency emphasized the importance of the season for managing the state’s deer population.
The two-week firearm season will continue until December 14, with 2,803 deer harvested on Sunday alone. Junior hunters also made a significant impact during the Junior Deer Hunt Days on November 16-17, with a 12 percent increase in harvest. Region B saw a 13 percent rise in antlerless deer harvested, balancing a 10 percent drop in antlered harvests. The Maryland DNR praised hunters for their efforts and contributions to wildlife management.
