Baltimore – Summer Mckinny, the 2025 American Girl Doll of the Year, is a 10-year-old entrepreneur from Columbia, Maryland who loves dogs and baking. Despite being only 18 inches tall, Summer runs a successful business and volunteers at her local animal shelter. Her story, set in Maryland, was written by Clare Hutton, who also hails from the state. To ensure authenticity, American Girl consulted with Katie Flory, the community care and advocacy director at the Maryland SPCA. Flory provided input on safety measures and animal care details in the story, emphasizing the importance of teaching kindness to animals to young people. While Summer volunteers at the Maryland SPCA, the shelter’s volunteer program is for those 17 years and older. However, the Maryland SPCA website offers ways for younger individuals to still contribute and help out. The collaboration between American Girl and the Maryland SPCA highlights the importance of instilling compassion and responsibility towards animals in children, and the impact of volunteer work in the community.
