During the 57th Annual Conference of the Chinese Language Press Institute in Beijing, it was highlighted that traditional Chinese language print media must embrace emerging technologies like 5G, cloud computing, big data, and generative AI to stay relevant in today’s fast-evolving digital landscape.
While AI presents both challenges and opportunities for the media industry, only slightly over 50 percent of media organizations are actively utilizing generative AI. This hesitancy is due to internal resistance, outdated workflows, and talent development issues. However, those who have embraced AI have identified several key areas where it can enhance media operations, including event monitoring, content verification, and language translation.
Despite the potential for innovation and efficiency, there are concerns about the integration of AI into journalism, particularly regarding false information and data privacy. The survey conducted by the Xinhua Institute showed that while some are optimistic about AI’s role in journalism, others are skeptical.
To address these concerns, the report suggests using AI to combat misinformation and calls for the establishment of international industry standards to ensure the safety and reliability of information. Additionally, enhancing professionalism within the industry is seen as essential for improving the quality of news reporting.
Overall, Chinese journalism is facing a transformative period, and the industry must adapt to the changing technological landscape to remain competitive.
