Governor Wes Moore, in partnership with President Biden’s administration, celebrated the award of more than $147 million in federal funding to the Port of Baltimore for clean jobs and decarbonization efforts. This funding, awarded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, will support the purchase of zero-emission vehicles and equipment, as well as upgrades to the port’s electrical grid to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The initiative aims to create a greener, cleaner, and healthier future while promoting economic growth and good-paying jobs.
Several political figures, including U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen, as well as Congressman Kweisi Mfume, emphasized the importance of these investments in reducing emissions, improving air quality, and creating clean energy jobs. The funding will also support community engagement in neighborhoods surrounding the port, such as Turner Station, Brooklyn, and Curtis Bay.
The Biden administration’s focus on infrastructure development in Maryland has included significant awards for projects like the Dundalk Marine Terminal Reconstruction and Curtis Creek Drawbridge Rehabilitation. These investments align with Maryland’s climate goals and commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2045.
Maryland Port Administration Executive Director Jonathan Daniels highlighted the port’s dedication to integrating environmental sustainability into its operations and supporting near-port environmental justice communities. The clean port initiative represents a step towards reducing pollution, combating climate change, and enhancing the region’s environmental and economic well-being.
