Solis Mammography, a Texas-based mammography technology lab, is now using artificial intelligence to detect breast arterial calcification during mammograms. This additional analysis aims to assess the risk of cardiovascular disease in patients. The technology is being offered at locations such as Washington Radiology in the D.C. area, with a cost of $119 for the screening.
Dr. Brian Choi, a professor at George Washington University, explained that the presence of breast arterial calcification could help predict vulnerability to heart disease, providing additional information beyond traditional risk factors like high blood pressure and cholesterol levels. While the screening can offer valuable insights, it is not currently covered by insurance, and efforts to secure coverage may take up to 10 years.
Chirag Parghi, Solis Mammography’s chief medical officer, highlighted the importance of combining heart health assessments with mammograms to provide comprehensive care for women. He emphasized the significance of early detection and prevention, especially for a serious condition like heart disease.
The use of AI technology in mammography represents a step towards personalized and proactive healthcare for women. By leveraging advanced tools and analyses, healthcare providers can offer more targeted and effective interventions for improving overall health outcomes.
