Rep. Nancy Mace, the top Republican on the House Oversight Subcommittee on Cybersecurity, issued a subpoena to the Biden administration as part of a probe into whether the government is limiting information on social media platforms ahead of the upcoming elections. Mace requested communications between the administration and social media companies, alleging that the administration has manipulated social media content in the past. Conservatives have accused the White House of pressuring social media companies like Meta to censor content that goes against their political agenda. However, the Supreme Court ruled that social media companies had independently strengthened their moderation policies before the administration got involved. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed that the White House pressured the company to censor certain material related to Covid-19, but later regretted complying with the requests. The subpoena requests documents related to any discussions between the administration and social media companies about suppressing information. Rep. Gerry Connolly, the ranking Democrat on the subcommittee, criticized the subpoena as an overreaction and accused Republicans of colluding with social media companies. The White House has not responded to the subpoena or commented on the issue.
