Meeting a member of the Royal Family comes with a set of rules and regulations that everyone, from lowly peasants to celebrities and world leaders, must follow. These rules cover everything from how to greet a royal, how to address them, and how to behave around them.
Despite these rules, many celebrities have made royal faux pas during their encounters with the Royal Family. Tennis legend Roger Federer greeted Kate Middleton by placing a hand on her back, breaking the ‘no touching’ rule. When Joe Biden met Queen Elizabeth II, he wore sunglasses, breaking the rule of eye contact being important in a formal introduction. Donald Trump went for a handshake instead of bowing and walked ahead of the Queen when they met.
Actor Allison Janney called Kate Middleton ‘honey’ and ran up to her barefoot during their meeting. Ed Sheeran touched Prince Charles on the arm when they met, which was a breach of protocol. LeBron James put his arm around Prince William and Kate Middleton, breaking the ‘no touching’ rule. Michelle Obama placed a hand on the Queen’s back during a visit, which she later realized could be seen as a faux pas.
Despite these breaches of protocol, it seems that the Royal Family may not mind a little rule-breaking from time to time. The instances mentioned show that even celebrities and world leaders are not immune to making mistakes when meeting members of the Royal Family.
