Cremation Business Faces Multi-Million-Dollar Lawsuit Over Alleged Violations
CHARLES COUNTY, Md. — A local cremation service is under fire, facing a multi-million-dollar lawsuit after a state oversight board revealed serious violations during a recent inspection. Attorneys allege that the issues observed were not mistakes but rather part of a scheme orchestrated by the owners, Rosa and Brandon Williams.
Attorney Cedric Lewis, who filed the lawsuit on behalf of Laura Dorsey, described the situation as unprecedented. Dorsey, who lost her husband Ron last Thanksgiving, expressed her anguish over not knowing the whereabouts of his remains. "He can’t cross over… I don’t have closure," she lamented. Dorsey, reflecting on what would have been her 15th anniversary, highlighted the emotional pain and lack of a death certificate as profound sources of distress.
The issues with Heaven Bound Crematorium have affected customers across Maryland, including those in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Dorsey became aware of the problems while seeking answers about her husband’s cremation, facilitated by a Department of Human Services voucher. "It’s just horrific," she said, emphasizing the vulnerability of low-income families facing such tragedies.
Lewis is also representing another Maryland family who received the wrong remains, having been informed months later that their loved one’s ashes were with the state, despite previously receiving ashes from Heaven Bound. WMAR-2 News has attempted to reach the business for comment, but the owners have not responded.
As the lawsuit unfolds, more legal challenges are anticipated. This distressing saga underscores the importance of accountability in the funeral service industry and raises alarming concerns for families seeking closure during their time of grief.
