Baltimore Man Dies in Police Custody Following Mental Health Crisis
BALTIMORE — An investigation is underway after a man became unresponsive while in police custody and later died in a local hospital. The incident occurred on Tuesday, June 24, when officers approached an unidentified man exhibiting signs of a mental health crisis at the intersection of West Franklin Street and North Franklintown Road.
While the officer initially attempted to engage with the man, he repeatedly wandered into traffic. In an effort to ensure his safety, the officer sought to restrain him. Additional officers soon arrived, placing the man in handcuffs and leg restraints. Despite their efforts, the man became unresponsive shortly thereafter, prompting police to transport him to a hospital after emergency medical services had still not arrived on the scene.
Unfortunately, the man was pronounced dead early Wednesday morning. The Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division confirmed that body-worn camera footage of the incident exists and will be released in accordance with policies. The IID is also urging anyone with relevant information, including video footage, to contact them at 410-576-7070.
