Governor Wes Moore Unveils State Center Redevelopment Plan in Baltimore
Maryland Governor Wes Moore has announced an ambitious redevelopment plan for the State Center complex in Baltimore City, promising a "transit-oriented concept" that will feature housing, retail, and green spaces connecting the Metro Subway and Cultural Center Light Rail stations. Moore emphasized that the initiative aims to create jobs and ensure affordable housing opportunities across the state.
This development opportunity follows a $58.5 million settlement in November 2024, resolving years of litigation that originated from a proposed public-private partnership in 2006 under former Governor Bob Ehrlich. Despite initial plans, lawsuits stalled progress, leading to cancellations and further legal disputes.
To facilitate the new redevelopment, the Maryland Department of General Services, alongside other state agencies, has issued a Request for Proposals for consultants to strategize on effective marketing and partnership development for State Center. Proposals are due by August 7.
The initiative aligns with Baltimore’s planning goals, focusing on diverse housing and commercial spaces. Mayor Brandon Scott highlighted the project as a crucial investment for the community, aiming to provide vital housing and workforce development opportunities while revitalizing the neighborhood. The selected consultant is expected to be announced later this fall.
