University of Maryland Achieves Record Academic Progress Rate

COLLEGE PARK, MD – The University of Maryland’s Athletic Department has set a new benchmark by achieving its highest-ever Academic Progress Rate (APR) of 988 for the 2023-24 academic year, according to recent NCAA reports. Notably, nine teams achieved a perfect APR score of 1000, including women’s basketball, women’s golf, gymnastics, women’s lacrosse, women’s soccer, softball, women’s track & field, volleyball, and wrestling.

This impressive uptick from last year’s 983 is a testament to the university’s commitment to academic excellence. Among the high-achieving teams, women’s basketball, women’s golf, and gymnastics have each posted a flawless 1000 multi-year score, demonstrating sustained excellence over four consecutive years. Additionally, ten athletic programs enhanced their multi-year scores, while another three maintained theirs. Fourteen teams maintain an exceptional multi-year APR above 980.

Colleen Sorem, Interim Barry P. Gossett Director of Athletics, expressed pride in this remarkable achievement, stating, "Our student-athletes continue to perform at the highest levels in the classroom," and praised the perfect scores as evidence of their dedication to academics.

The consistent performance of teams like gymnastics, which has posted a perfect score for four straight years, and women’s golf, which has maintained a flawless APR since the 2015-16 season, highlights the athletic department’s focus on blending sports with academics.

Brady Rourke, Director of the Gossett Center, emphasized the inspiring nature of this achievement, attributing success to the collaborative efforts of faculty, coaches, and support staff who champion the student-athlete experience.

The APR scores reflect data from four academic years (2020-2024) and serve as a critical measure of student-athlete eligibility and retention across NCAA Division I institutions.
