Extreme Heat Warning Issued for Maryland
Maryland remains under an Extreme Heat Warning until 9 p.m. Tuesday, with temperatures climbing to a sweltering 102 degrees by afternoon, leading to heightened risks of heat-related illnesses. Chief Meteorologist Tom Tasselmyer alerts residents to prepare for these conditions, advising them to stay hydrated, reschedule outdoor activities, seek shade or air conditioning, and check on vulnerable individuals, including pets.
In response to the escalating heat, cooling centers have opened statewide, encouraging residents to utilize these facilities. The Baltimore region could see temperatures exceed 100 degrees, potentially breaking a record set in 2010.
Construction crews continue to work outside despite the oppressive heat, with officials highlighting the need for caution. Aamir Khurram, operations manager with the Maryland State Highway Administration, noted the importance of taking breaks and staying hydrated. Although construction activity persisted, many public spaces, including Baltimore’s Washington Monument, remain closed to protect public safety.
In a proactive response, Governor Wes Moore declared a State of Preparedness, underscoring the state’s commitment to safeguarding residents from the dangers of extreme heat and humidity. “Our top priority is the health and safety of Marylanders,” Moore stated.
