What Do Marylanders Love Most About Their State?

Celebrating Maryland Day: A Tribute to the State’s Rich Heritage and Diversity

On March 25, 1634, the English settlers aboard the Ark and the Dove established the Maryland colony, disembarking at present-day St. Clement’s Island in St. Mary’s County. Today, this 62-acre park, accessible only by boat, features a memorial cross honoring the roughly 140 settlers who began this profound chapter in American history.

Maryland Day, which commemorates this significant arrival, was first observed in 1903 when the State Board of Education designated a day to celebrate state history. It became a legal holiday in 1916, authorized by the Maryland General Assembly.

In a recent UMBC Poll, conducted by the Institute of Politics, Maryland residents shared their favorite aspects of the state as part of this year’s celebration. Notably, 24% cited Maryland’s natural beauty, highlighting attractions such as the Chesapeake Bay and extensive outdoor recreation opportunities. Another 15% appreciated the geographical diversity, revealing a unique charm where one can experience beaches, mountains, and urban settings in a single day.

Seventeen percent of respondents celebrated the vibrant communities and people of Maryland, with one noting the state’s signature pride and sense of belonging. Additionally, 14% mentioned Maryland’s distinctive culinary scene, particularly its renowned crabs and crab cakes.

Mileah Kromer, director of the UMBC Institute of Politics, commented on the survey, stating, “The responses highlight the many things to love about Maryland. It truly embodies the ‘America in miniature’ moniker.”

As Marylanders proudly celebrate their state, the day serves as a reminder of the rich history, cultural diversity, and natural beauty that make Maryland a cherished home for its residents.
