Pittman’s Bid for Maryland Democratic Party Chair: Implications for Anne Arundel – Capital Gazette

Pittman Set to Succeed Ulman as Maryland Democratic Party Chair

Steuart Pittman, the current Anne Arundel County Executive, is poised to take over as chair of the Maryland Democratic Party following Ken Ulman’s resignation announcement. Governor Wes Moore and Ulman have both endorsed Pittman for the role, likely ensuring his nomination later this month to complete Ulman’s term, set to expire next year.

Pittman, a two-term county executive, now faces significant hurdles as he prepares to manage fundraising and campaign efforts for the party. With the entire Maryland statewide elected office contingent, including the governor, General Assembly, and other key roles up for re-election in 2026, his responsibilities will be considerable.

Central committee members statewide will vote on Pittman’s nomination on June 21, but as of now, he faces no opposition. Despite concerns over how he will juggle the demands of his current role with those of party chair, Pittman remains optimistic. He likened the duality of campaign and governance to the workload he managed during his re-election efforts.

Critics, such as political science professor Dan Nataf, express doubt over Pittman’s capacity to balance both responsibilities effectively, warning it could become a “distraction.” Nonetheless, Pittman views his potential chairmanship as an opportunity to bolster the party and expand its donor base, focusing on collective wins for upcoming elections.

Endorsing his special assistant James Kitchin for the county executive role, Pittman emphasized his commitment to supporting the eventual nominee without favoritism.

As Ulman prepares to step down from a role often seen as transient, Pittman shifts his focus to servicing the broader Maryland Democratic base while maintaining his connection to Anne Arundel County. His long history in community organizing positions him uniquely to foster engagement across diverse demographics in the state.
