Maryland to Raise Vehicle Emissions Inspection Fees Amid Budget Shortfall
Starting July 1, the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) will likely increase the cost of vehicle emissions inspections from $14 to a maximum of $30, as part of a broader set of tax and fee increases approved by the General Assembly to tackle a significant budget deficit. This change will require a regulatory process before it can take effect.
The Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program (VEIP) mandates that vehicle owners complete emissions testing every two years to help mitigate air pollution. According to Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld, the VEIP fee has remained unchanged since 1997, marking a long overdue adjustment.
The anticipated revenue from the increased inspection fees is earmarked for the state’s transportation trust fund, which has supported the Maryland Department of Transportation since 1971. Officials note that the additional funds will be directed towards crucial transportation projects, including enhancements to Interstate 81 and U.S. 15.
However, the decision has attracted criticism from some legislators. Republican Del. Ryan Nawrocki expressed his discontent on social media, stating, “Democrats in Annapolis continue to punish drivers with gas vehicles” in reference to the increased inspection fee.
In related news, the Maryland Board of Public Works is expected to approve a new contract with Envirotest Corp. to manage VEIP stations and self-service kiosks across 13 of the state’s 23 counties and Baltimore City, as outlined in the upcoming meeting agenda.
