Israel Commits to Prevent Aid Boat with Greta Thunberg from Reaching Gaza

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has stated his commitment to prevent the aid vessel Madleen, carrying climate activist Greta Thunberg and other supporters, from reaching Gaza. The Madleen, which departed Sicily aiming to breach Israel’s naval blockade and deliver humanitarian aid, is currently about 160 nautical miles from Gaza. Katz emphasized that he instructed the Israel Defense Forces to take necessary actions against what he termed the “Madeline hate flotilla,” criticizing Thunberg and others as anti-Semitic and linked with Hamas propaganda.

The crew of the Madleen, prepared for potential interception, reported earlier issues with their boat’s tracking signal being jammed. Alongside Thunberg, notable figures on board include actor Liam Cunningham and Rima Hassan, a French MEP previously barred from entering Israel due to her outspoken opposition to its military operations.

Thunberg stated that despite the risks, the mission is crucial as silence in the face of ongoing suffering is far more dangerous. Meanwhile, Israel has rejected claims of genocide despite allegations from various humanitarian organizations. In response to rising starvation in Gaza, Israel had previously lifted a total blockade on essential supplies, allowing basic aid to enter, yet reports of violence during aid distribution have raised concerns.

After the October 7 Hamas-led attacks, which resulted in numerous casualties and hostages, Israel maintains the blockade as a measure to pressure Hamas. The situation in Gaza has deteriorated sharply, with reports indicating a high number of civilian casualties since the escalation began. The fate of the Madleen and its passengers remains uncertain amidst the conflicting narratives and ongoing tensions in the region.
