Baltimore’s Inner Harbor Cleanup Efforts Underway After Diesel Fuel Spill

BALTIMORE, MD—A significant diesel fuel spill in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor on Wednesday has initiated major cleanup operations, turning parts of the harbor red. Approximately 2,000 gallons of diesel overflowed from tanks belonging to a vendor of Johns Hopkins Hospital, flowing into the storm drain system. Mayor Brandon Scott announced that cleanup is making progress, with the water’s red tint fading.

The Maryland Department of the Environment reports that 18,000 gallons of oil-water mixture have been recovered, and Maryland Governor Wes Moore confirmed that 10 city and state agencies are involved in the cleanup. Emergency responders are using absorbent materials and skimmers to contain and remove the fuel, while monitoring air quality with no significant concerns reported.

Johns Hopkins Hospital is fully funding the cleanup and investigating the oversight that led to the spill. Wildlife are being monitored, with 25 birds and three turtles rescued for rehabilitation.

Local businesses near Harbor East face disruptions due to road closures, impacting customer access. As cleanup continues, officials strive to safeguard residents, wildlife, and the environment against further contamination.
