Maryland Senators Call for Accountability in Trump Administration
In a recent rally, Maryland Democratic Senators Chris Van Hollen and Angela Alsobrooks escalated their efforts to hold Trump administration officials accountable. Alsobrooks specifically urged the resignation of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr., citing his controversial stance on medical issues and calls for mass layoffs within the agency.
"As of this Monday, I will be filing a Senate resolution and calling for Secretary Kennedy’s resignation. He must go," said Alsobrooks, referencing his previous statements justifying medical racism and questioning vaccine efficacy. During his confirmation, Kennedy made remarks that contradicted public health aims, which Van Hollen characterized as a betrayal of the legacy of their uncle, the late President John F. Kennedy, who championed vaccine expansion for the public’s benefit.
Both senators have also signed anti-corruption legislation aimed at banning top officials from engaging in cryptocurrency activities, highlighting concerns over a new cryptocurrency, $TRUMP, which reportedly generated hundreds of millions within its first 100 days. Alsobrooks labeled this development a potential pathway to corruption, asserting that "this president is trying to erect yet another scam to sell influence and enrich himself."
In addition to health concerns, Maryland lawmakers, including Senate President Bill Ferguson and Congressman Glenn Ivey, are voicing alarm over the economic implications of Trump’s recent policies, especially cuts to healthcare. Ferguson emphasized the proposed 2026 federal budget’s impact on health services, warning of significant disruptions. Ivey highlighted the reduction in worker protections and labor rights, arguing that such actions contradict the administration’s claims of supporting working Americans.
Maryland legislators remain vigilant as they navigate these challenges, urging accountability and reform.
