Damon Evans Poised to Depart Maryland for SMU, Speculation Surrounds Kevin Willard’s Future
University of Maryland’s Athletic Director Damon Evans appears set to leave for the same position at Southern Methodist University (SMU), a rumor supported by Terps men’s basketball coach Kevin Willard amid discussions of his own uncertain future in College Park. With the NCAA Tournament on the horizon, Willard is reportedly negotiating a contract extension that hinges on necessary changes within the athletic program.
While preparing his team for the upcoming tournament, Willard expressed his desire for fundamental improvements at Maryland. He noted, “I need to see fundamental changes done,” emphasizing his goal of elevating the program to national championship contention. Willard is concerned Evans’ potential departure complicates extension negotiations, as his term sheet for an extension came just before Selection Sunday.
Rick Jaklitsch, a Maryland booster, believes Willard will remain with the team, dismissing the Villanova speculation. Evans, who became the state’s eighth-highest-paid employee in 2024, has overseen substantial growth in Maryland athletics, including the opening of new facilities for football and basketball.
As Evans considers a move to SMU, the timing raises eyebrows, particularly given the Terps’ tournament ambitions. Willard voiced concerns about the university’s financial priorities, particularly around name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals, when compared to peers in the Big Ten.
Maryland’s athletic department has also faced increases in obligations following an antitrust lawsuit settlement and an agreement to share $20.5 million with athletes. Given Evans’ role in the department’s upward trajectory, his expected departure could leave a significant void at a critical time for Maryland athletics.
As the Terps gear up for tournament play, both Evans and Willard face pivotal moments that will shape the future of Maryland athletics.
