“Lilo & Stitch” and “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” led the box office following a record-setting Memorial Day weekend, contributing to a stunning $149 million total for the weekend, a remarkable 120% increase from the same period last year. Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch,” a live-action hybrid, grossed $63 million from 4,410 locations, becoming the second-highest-grossing film of the year with $280.1 million domestically and $610.8 million globally. Meanwhile, “Sinners” continued its strong performance, earning $5.2 million in its seventh weekend, accumulating $267.1 million domestically.
“Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” secured second place with $27.3 million from 3,861 locations, dropping 57% from its opening. The film has reached a domestic total of $122.6 million and a global total of $353.8 million but has a long way to go to profitability, given its $400 million budget.
Among new releases, Sony’s “Karate Kid: Legends,” featuring Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio, opened strongly at $21 million from 3,809 theaters, earning an A- CinemaScore. It has a worldwide total of $47 million.
“Final Destination: Bloodlines” ranked fourth with $10.8 million, becoming the highest-grossing film in its franchise. A horror film, “Bring Her Back,” debuted in fifth place with $7.1 million, receiving a B+ CinemaScore.
Additionally, a new Wes Anderson film, “The Phoenician Scheme,” also debuted to $270,000 in select markets. The summer box office outlook remains optimistic, projected to finish May with $973 million, reflecting a 75% increase from May 2024.
