Patricia Krenwinkel, a long-term inmate and follower of Charles Manson, has been recommended for parole by a California state parole board for the second time. This recommendation must be reviewed and approved by the Board of Parole Hearings and Governor Gavin Newsom, who previously denied her first parole recommendation in October 2022. The review process can take up to 150 days.
At 77 years old, Krenwinkel is serving a life sentence for her involvement in the notorious murders of pregnant actress Sharon Tate and four others in August 1969, as well as the killings of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca the following night. Convicted in April 1971 on seven counts of first-degree murder, this marks Krenwinkel’s 16th parole suitability hearing, having been denied parole 14 times before her first recommendation in May 2022.
Krenwinkel, who was 19 when she first encountered Manson, recounted how she abandoned her previous life to join him, mistakenly believing in a romantic relationship. Over time, she experienced abuse and struggled with substance addiction, which complicated her attempts to escape. During the infamous Tate and LaBianca murders, she actively participated in the violence and infamously wrote “Helter Skelter” on a wall using the victims’ blood.
Initially sentenced to death, Krenwinkel’s sentence was commuted to life with the possibility of parole in 1972 following the temporary abolition of the death penalty in California. Today, she is the state’s longest-serving female inmate. As of now, the governor’s office has not commented on her recent parole hearing outcome.
