Authorities in Georgia are investigating the discovery of a badly burned body found in Stone Mountain Park on Saturday. A hiker reported the body to the police around 8:18 a.m. The location, described as opposite the park’s walking trail and about 100 yards from the cable car tower, is not remote but is infrequently hiked. John Bankhead, spokesperson for the Stone Mountain Department of Public Safety, noted that park personnel were surprised by the finding, as it is unlike anything they have encountered in the park’s history.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is collaborating with local authorities, and an autopsy has been scheduled with the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office. While officials have a possible identity for the deceased based on personal items found nearby, they have yet to confirm it. Additionally, fire investigators from the DeKalb County Fire Rescue Department are focusing on the circumstances surrounding the fire that claimed the man’s life.
