Bear Sightings Spark Curiosity in Bethesda Neighborhood
A black bear’s unexpected visit to a Bethesda neighborhood on Saturday morning stirred excitement among residents. Natasha Elisa, a local homeowner, was enjoying her coffee when she spotted the bear close to her property. “I yelled, ‘It’s a bear!’” she recounted, noting that while deer are common in the area, a bear is a rare sight.
Having lived in the DMV for over 20 years without encountering a bear, Elisa found the experience quite surprising. Resident videos and photos documented the bear’s exploration through backyards and porches, capturing the fascination of onlookers.
This incident marks the second bear sighting in Maryland this week; earlier, a bear was seen relaxing in a tree in Langley Park, prompting residents to pause their holiday celebrations. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources intervened with that bear, tranquilizing and relocating it to a wildlife management area.
While some residents are thrilled to witness such wildlife, others prefer to maintain a safe distance. “I’m not too worried,” Elisa said. “It was a cool thing to happen. Made for an exciting Saturday.” As bear encounters become more frequent, Marylanders are reminded to stay informed and exercise caution.
