A salmonella outbreak linked to a Florida cucumber producer, Bedner Growers, has impacted 45 individuals across 18 states, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The outbreak has prompted several retailers, including Target and Walmart, to recall cucumbers and related ready-to-eat products, advising customers to discard these items. Recalled products include Boar’s Head Greek-style chicken salad and various sushi rolls labeled under the Mai brand.
As of now, 16 of the reported cases have resulted in hospitalization, though there have been no fatalities. The primary strain under investigation is salmonella montevideo, but multiple unrelated strains were identified during inspections, raising concerns for further illnesses. The cucumbers in question were sold between April 29 and May 19, and the outbreak’s initial retailers were three Bedner’s Farm Fresh Market locations.
The FDA’s inspection revealed contaminated cucumbers at Bedner Growers’ facilities, following a previous salmonella outbreak linked to the same producer last year. Fresh Start Produce Sales, the distributor for Bedner, has expressed commitment to public health during the recall process.
Salmonella, a common cause of foodborne illness, can result in severe symptoms like stomach cramps, diarrhea, and nausea, particularly in vulnerable populations such as the elderly and young children. The CDC and FDA continue their investigations, focusing on preventing further spread and addressing the health risks associated with the outbreak.
