Hiker Rescued After Fall at Catoctin State Park
THURMONT, Md. (7News) — A Memorial Day hiking trip took a perilous turn when a hiker fell from a rock face at Wolf Rock in Catoctin State Park on May 25. Emergency personnel quickly responded to a distress call, assessing the need for an aerial hoist rescue due to the remote location and serious nature of the hiker’s injuries.
Frederick County Fire Rescue initiated patient care while preparing the injured hiker for extraction. With Trooper 3 engaged in another mission, Maryland State Police dispatched Trooper 2 from Joint Base Andrews. A Trooper and Rescue Technician were lowered to secure the victim for extraction by helicopter.
After successfully hoisting the hiker from the cliff, the helicopter transported them to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center for further treatment. The Maryland State Police Aviation Command, operational since 1970, employs a fleet of ten AW139 helicopters across seven bases, providing crucial 24/7 coverage for medevac, law enforcement, and search and rescue operations statewide. This incident highlights the ongoing dedication of emergency services to ensure the safety of outdoor enthusiasts in Maryland.
