Maryland Governor Wes Moore Declares He Will Not Run for President

Maryland Governor Wes Moore Addresses Political Speculation During South Carolina Trip

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Maryland Governor Wes Moore, frequently mentioned as a potential Democratic candidate for the 2028 presidential election, reaffirmed this week that he is not pursuing a run for the White House. His upcoming trip to South Carolina, where he will address the Blue Palmetto Dinner, is strictly business-oriented, focusing on fostering economic opportunities for Maryland, he stated.

“I’m not running,” Moore emphasized in an interview with The Associated Press, adding that he is not positioning himself for a vice presidential candidacy either. His South Carolina engagements will include meetings with business leaders, reflecting his commitment to bringing business back to Maryland.

In his third year of governance, Moore aims for reelection in a state where Democrats hold a significant advantage. He continues to navigate economic challenges, particularly the fallout from federal downsizing under the Trump administration, which has severely impacted Maryland’s economy due to its proximity to Washington, D.C. The recent loss of Maryland’s triple-A bond rating by Moody’s, after over 50 years, has heightened concerns about fiscal stability; state officials attribute this downgrade to federal reductions impacting local revenue.

This year, Moore faced a challenging legislative session, grappling with a $3.3 billion budget deficit. He collaborated with fellow Democrats to finalize a balanced budget involving $2 billion in cuts and $1.6 billion in new taxes primarily targeting high-income earners.

As Maryland’s first Black governor, Moore has faced scrutiny over various issues, including his veto of a reparations study bill, but argues for practical solutions towards economic equality and closing wealth gaps. Despite the political noise, Moore remains focused on his responsibilities as governor, with an eye on the forthcoming reelection.
