Maryland Zoo Unveils Plans for Red Panda Exhibit, Set to Open in 2026
BALTIMORE, Md. — The Maryland Zoo has officially broken ground on a new red panda exhibit, slated for completion in 2026. This initiative is part of a broader renovation plan aimed at revitalizing the historic zoo, which celebrates its 150th anniversary next year, making it the third oldest zoo in the country.
The red panda habitat represents the first new animal exhibit at the Maryland Zoo in over two decades. “The red panda habitat will bring dynamic, charismatic animals right to the front of our Zoo,” stated Maryland Zoo President & CEO Kirby Fowler.
In addition to the red pandas, the zoo is also enhancing its facilities with a new parking lot, a gibbon habitat, and an eagle and snowy owl flyway, along with upgraded rental amenities. The new red panda home will be located between the Round Cage and Round Stand in Main Valley, an area previously occupied by a snowy owl.
Interestingly, red pandas are part of their unique taxonomic group, Ailuridae, and were the first species to be labeled as “panda” fifty years prior to their giant counterparts, refuting common misconceptions about their lineage.
