Harmer’s Town Art Center Transforms Havre de Grace
HAVRE DE GRACE, MD — The Harmer’s Town Art Center (HTAC), located at 115 Market Street, is reshaping the cultural landscape of historic Havre de Grace. This nonprofit initiative aims to revitalize a vacant 34,000-square-foot building into a vibrant hub for artists, featuring studio spaces, a makerspace, and an interactive art park named Graw Alley.
Founded by local visionary Allen Fair, who drew inspiration from his childhood at The Graw horse racetrack, the center officially unveiled Graw Alley to the public in October 2023. This one-acre park, transformed from an alley, celebrates the city’s rich racing history with landscaped pathways, colorful murals, and art sculptures, including a life-size statue of the racehorse "Havre de Grace" by artist Aaron Paskins.
HTAC aims to position Havre de Grace as a regional arts destination, providing diverse programming and events like art parties and live music, as highlighted by board member Pam Spelker. Future plans include converting existing garages into art studios and a makerspace for industrial arts, inviting both locals and visitors to engage with creative endeavors. Graw Alley is accessible daily from multiple streets, welcoming all to experience this artistic renaissance.
