Prince George’s County Residents Lose Over $1 Million to Scams in 2025
In the first four months of 2025, Prince George’s County, Maryland, has witnessed alarming scam activities, with residents losing at least $1 million. Among the victims is a local man who lost $40,000 after being deceived by fraudsters posing as Microsoft tech support, bank representatives, and federal agents. He shared his story, emphasizing that he initially believed he was safeguarding his money, labeling the scammers as "evil geniuses".
The scam began when the victim received a pop-up warning him of a supposed computer hack. He called the number provided, unknowingly engaging with impersonators who skillfully executed their roles. Despite expressing skepticism, polished rhetoric convinced him to comply, leading to financial loss.
Prince George’s County Police have made arrests, including Gyoung Lee, 47, and Parmveer Parmveer, 25, in connection with the scams. Sgt. John Quarless underlined the importance of reporting such crimes and reassuring victims that they should not feel embarrassed.
With the FBI reporting over $1.4 billion lost to similar scams in 2024, residents are advised to remain vigilant, recognizing red flags such as urgency and demands for untraceable payments. Law enforcement encourages open communication to prevent future incidents.
