Listeria Outbreak Hospitalizes Over 10 in California and Nevada

In a listeria outbreak currently under investigation by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), at least 10 individuals have been hospitalized in California and Nevada. The outbreak is linked to ready-to-eat foods produced by Fresh & Ready Foods LLC, which are being voluntarily recalled. The recall affects over 80 products, including snack boxes, sandwiches, and pastas, which have best-by dates ranging from April 22 to May 19. These products were distributed across Arizona, California, Nevada, and Washington in various settings, such as hospitals, hotels, corporate offices, convenience stores, airports, and airlines.

The investigation, which began in 2024, was initially inconclusive in identifying the outbreak source. However, it was reopened in April 2025 after listeria was detected in environmental samples from Fresh & Ready Foods during a routine inspection. Whole genome sequencing linked the strain from the facility to those causing the illnesses. In response, the company has implemented corrective measures, including the removal of certain equipment, to enhance food safety.

Of the reported illnesses, eight are from California, and two are from Nevada. Symptoms of listeriosis, which can develop within two weeks but may take up to 10 weeks to appear, include fever, nausea, muscle aches, vomiting, and diarrhea. The FDA advises retailers and consumers who have purchased the recalled items to sanitize any areas they may have contaminated, as listeria can easily spread. At-risk groups, including pregnant women, newborns, seniors, and individuals with weakened immune systems, are strongly encouraged to seek medical advice if they experience symptoms.
