Toddler Tragically Dies After Being Left in Car for Hours

Tragic Heatstroke Incident Claims Life of Toddler in Wheaton-Glenmont

WHEATON-GLENMONT, Md. — A heartbreaking incident unfolded on Wednesday when a 2-year-old girl tragically died after being left inside a vehicle for several hours. Montgomery County Fire and Rescue responded to the emergency in the Wheaton-Glenmont area, where they discovered the unconscious child and quickly transported her to a local hospital. Unfortunately, she did not survive.

The Montgomery County Department of Police confirmed that they were responding to a "working code involving a child in a vehicle" at the time. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is ongoing, with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner yet to determine an official cause of death.

This heartbreaking event highlights a growing concern regarding pediatric vehicular heatstroke, particularly as warmer months approach. In 2024, Maryland witnessed 14 tragic deaths linked to heatstroke incidents, according to NoHeatStroke.org, a resource that tracks hot car fatalities. As of March 2025, only one heatstroke-related death has been reported in the United States, occurring in New Jersey. Community awareness and preventive measures remain critical in preventing such tragedies in the future.
