Nation’s Caregivers Rally Against Proposed Medicaid Cuts
In a fervent display of opposition, Nicole Jorwic, chief program officer at Caring Across Generations, led a 24-hour vigil on the National Mall to protest significant proposed Medicaid cuts. Joined by 15 Democratic lawmakers, including Senators Chris Van Hollen and Jamie Raskin, over 300 participants voiced concerns over a plan that could slash federal Medicaid spending by $880 billion over the next decade.
"This is about real people," Jorwic asserted, emphasizing the impact on family caregivers, disabled individuals, and aging adults. Van Hollen condemned the cuts, stating, "Keep your hands off our Medicaid," referencing stories from constituents like Mary H., whose son relies on Medicaid during his fight against colon cancer, underscoring the program’s critical role in healthcare.
The protest coincided with a House Energy and Commerce Committee meeting, initially scheduled to discuss the proposal but postponed amid bipartisan backlash. Participants expressed optimism that their advocacy influenced this delay.
As momentum builds against the proposed legislation, Jorwic vowed to continue advocacy efforts, including a video campaign aimed at holding lawmakers accountable. Participants echoed a commitment to fight for the integrity of Medicaid, asserting that any cuts threaten not just healthcare access but also the livelihoods of healthcare workers nationwide.
