Press Release
YORK, Pa. — Pennsylvania State Senator Kristin Phillips-Hill expresses deep concerns about the rising electricity demands from neighboring states, primarily due to the rapid expansion of data centers in Northern Virginia and insufficient energy policies in Maryland. In a recent interview, Phillips-Hill lamented that Pennsylvania currently carries the burden of stabilizing the regional electric grid, regularly exporting surplus electricity to Maryland, Washington D.C., and Northern Virginia.
“As we continue to support our neighbors, at some point, something has to give," she remarked. The Republican leader voiced her discontent over past attempts, notably the defeated TransSource Energy’s power line project aimed at transporting Pennsylvania-generated electricity into Maryland.
Citing data from PJM Interconnection, Phillips-Hill highlighted that while Virginia’s electricity generation often leads to significant shortfalls, Pennsylvania consistently generates excess energy. She underscored an ongoing energy crisis stemming from failed policies in surrounding states, emphasizing the need for more self-sufficient energy generation.
Until neighboring states, especially Virginia, implement stricter regulations on data center energy consumption, Pennsylvania residents will continue to face challenges under the current framework, she warned.
