University of Maryland Football Team Hosts Inclusive Clinic for All Abilities
COLLEGE PARK — In a heartwarming display of community engagement, the University of Maryland football team organized an inclusive football clinic, welcoming over 100 participants of diverse ages and abilities to the field. In partnership with the Beautiful Lives Project, the Terps swapped their usual game-day preparations for an uplifting day of camaraderie and support.
The clinic, held at Jones-Hill House, provided a fun atmosphere where participants could engage in various drills, receive coaching from Maryland players, and experience the joy of football in an inclusive setting. Tony Gionfriddo, Executive Director of Beautiful Lives Project, emphasized the event’s goal of creating a welcoming environment where everyone can feel part of the team.
Among the participants was Brian McCallister Jr., a young boy fighting brain cancer, whose mother, Nora Zeigenfuse, expressed gratitude for the opportunity. "It’s great for him to learn in a supportive environment," she said, highlighting the clinic’s significance for children like Brian.
Maryland players, including Long Snapper Ethan Gough and cornerback Lloyd Irvin III, played an active role in fostering excitement. Gough shared, "Just seeing their smiles when they score or make a catch is incredible." Irvin, drawing from personal experience with family members who have disabilities, noted the deep connection formed with participants during the event.
Head Coach Michael Locksley reflected on the emotional impact of the day, remarking, "It reaffirmed the goodness in college sports," as athletes bridged the gap between competition and community service.
Whether through passing, cheering, or sharing joyful moments, the event illustrated the football team’s commitment to giving back.
