Press Release: Montgomery County Man Falls Victim to $400K Phishing Scam
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — Authorities arrested a suspect involved in a phishing scheme that defrauded a Rockville resident of $400,000. The Montgomery County Office of Consumer Protection (MCOCP) reported that the victim, lured by a convincing narrative, sent multiple checks to a Canadian business before realizing the scam.
Phishing scams involve criminals impersonating trustworthy entities through emails, texts, or phone calls, aiming to trick victims into disclosing personal and financial information. The MCOCP emphasized that these scams often create a sense of urgency, pressuring victims to act hastily.
After tracing the funds to Canadian bank accounts, local police collaborated with financial institutions to close the fraudulent accounts. In March, Ontario’s Peel Regional Police arrested a suspect, but the investigation continues.
Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich highlighted the growing sophistication of phishing scams, particularly affecting vulnerable populations. "I applaud the efforts of the Office of Consumer Protection in combating these threats and educating the public on avoiding fraud," he stated.
The identity of the arrested suspect remains undisclosed as investigations proceed. Residents are urged to remain vigilant against similar online scams.
