Former Maryland Football Player Charged in West Virginia Shooting Incident
In a disturbing incident on April 27, former Maryland football defensive back, Tayvon Nelson, was charged with first-degree robbery following a shooting in West Virginia. According to MetroNews, Nelson, who had recently transferred to Marshall University, was arrested and is scheduled to appear in court for a preliminary hearing on May 9.
The incident took place at a residence in West Virginia where two victims were discovered with gunshot wounds. Reports from WSAZ, an NBC affiliate, indicated that both Nelson and another person involved in the altercation sustained injuries from gunfire. Nelson’s association with the Marshall University football program has since ended, as he was dismissed shortly after these events.
Nelson, just 19 years old, was a promising athlete who joined the Maryland Terrapins in 2023 after being recruited from Canarsie High School in Brooklyn, New York. He was a three-star cornerback, and his talent led to a scholarship offer from Maryland head coach Michael Locksley in June of 2022. After a season with the Terps, Nelson transferred to Marshall in December 2024.
In connection with the shooting, another Marshall student has also been charged with first-degree robbery. Maryland athletics declined to comment on the situation following Nelson’s arrest, and the Huntington police department has not returned inquiries regarding the case.
As this shocking story develops, the college football community remains attentive to the implications it may hold for both the athletes involved and the institutions they represent.
