Baltimore Businessman Ed Hale Sr. Announces Run for Maryland Governor
Baltimore native Ed Hale Sr., a retired banker and businessman, has officially announced his candidacy for the Maryland governor’s office in the 2026 Democratic primary. The 78-year-old former chairman and CEO of 1st Mariner Bank aims to challenge incumbent Governor Wes Moore.
Hale, a lifelong Democrat and prominent figure in Baltimore business circles, has a diverse background. After leaving 1st Mariner Bank in 2011, he expanded his ventures into shipping and real estate, notably transforming the Canton Waterfront. He currently owns the Baltimore Blast, the city’s indoor soccer team, and previously led Baltimore’s tourism agency, Visit Baltimore.
In addition to his business accomplishments, Hale has a unique history involving the CIA, where he worked undercover in logistics from 1991 to 2001. He revealed he played a role in the early search for Osama Bin Laden. However, he faced legal challenges in 2011 when charged for carrying a loaded gun at BWI Airport, resulting in probation and fines.
During his campaign launch in Baltimore, Hale expressed concerns over Maryland’s high taxes and governance, which he believes are driving businesses away. "We need to find ways to cut taxes, not raise them," he stated, highlighting recent business relocations, such as Six Flags America and the FBI headquarters.
Hale also criticized the state’s juvenile justice system, emphasizing the need for more effective deterrents for youthful offenders. He portrayed Governor Moore, who has seen a dip in approval ratings, as distracted by presidential ambitions, asserting, "I’m going to be that person who is fully invested in Maryland."
Hale’s entry into the gubernatorial race adds an interesting dynamic as Maryland heads towards the 2026 primaries.
