Trailblazing Women in Maryland Horseracing: A Shift in the "Sport of Kings"
Laurel, Md. — Horseracing, long known as the "sport of kings," is witnessing a significant shift in Maryland, driven by two pioneering women: Forest Boyce and Brittney Russell. Both are rising stars in an industry traditionally dominated by men, making impressive strides as they compete in various roles within the sport.
Forest Boyce stands out as one of the most successful jockeys in the Mid-Atlantic region, boasting over 1,000 wins and more than $38 million in career earnings. "I love horses, and it’s one of the few paths to a living with horses without vast financial resources," she shared. Meanwhile, Brittney Russell has made a name for herself as Maryland’s leading trainer, with 633 career wins, ranking 11th nationally.
Both women emphasize their passion for horses over gender, striving to focus on their skills and contributions to the sport. As interest in women in horseracing grows, Boyce and Russell are determined to continue breaking barriers. They’ll be showcasing their talents at the prestigious Black-Eyed Susan Day on May 16 and the Preakness Stakes on May 17 at Pimlico Race Course, making it an exciting time for fans and competitors alike.
