Maryland Sports Gear Up for Playoff Season
The much-anticipated playoff season is here for Maryland sports, including Washington County teams, starting May 7. The excitement builds as teams aim for league championships, but with Maryland’s open playoff policy, which allows every school a chance at postseason play regardless of their regular-season record, much of the regular season has become preparatory.
For the North Hagerstown baseball team, this is its moment to shine. The Hubs, with a record of 16-4, began the season strong but faced challenges mid-way before rebounding with a five-game winning streak. Their recent 4-3 victory over Smithsburg has set a positive tone heading into the playoffs, with Coach Justin Lewis highlighting the importance of momentum.
“Our teamwork has really improved, especially in our last five games,” said player James Ortiz, reflecting on the team’s renewed defensive trust.
As the playoffs commence, North Hagerstown aims for its 11th regional title and a sixth state championship. Other Washington County teams are also preparing for competitive matchups:

Baseball: North Hagerstown, as the top seed in Class 3A West I, will host the winner of South Hagerstown vs. Oakdale. In Class 1A West II, Smithsburg hosts Hancock, while Clear Spring has a first-round bye.

Softball: The playoff landscape looks intense with Smithsburg facing Clear Spring, and Williamsport, the second seed, competing against Hancock.
- Boys and Girls Lacrosse: Smithsburg aims for its seventh consecutive regional title in boys’ lacrosse, while girls’ matches kick off with Smithsburg and North Hagerstown facing off against Brunswick and Frederick, respectively.
With various sports entering the critical phases of playoffs and regional finals by mid-May, the excitement in Washington County is palpable as teams vie for state glory.
