Maryland Joins Lawsuit Against Trump Administration Over Electric Vehicles

Maryland Joins Multi-State Lawsuit Against Trump’s EV Funding Cuts

Maryland has joined 15 other states in a lawsuit aimed at overturning former President Donald Trump’s executive order that restricts billions in funding for electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. The legal action was filed in U.S. District Court for Washington state, contending that the U.S. Department of Transportation is unlawfully withholding approximately $3 billion allocated to enhance EV infrastructure.

Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown emphasized that the order jeopardizes Maryland’s share of $49 million needed to expand EV charging networks, crucial for reducing emissions and promoting cleaner vehicles. The lawsuit contests Trump’s “Unleashing American Energy” executive order, which claimed to eliminate a non-existent EV mandate by blocking federated funding.

This filed lawsuit is one of three taken on by Maryland this week, reflecting a broader strategy among Democrat-led states to challenge Trump’s policies. A federal judge recently granted a temporary injunction against another executive order that aimed to diminish federal agency operations related to mediation services and minority business support. The states argue these actions undermine essential programs and services critical for economic equity and environmental progress.

Maryland continues to advocate for responsible funding and regulatory frameworks that support its commitment to sustainable energy and infrastructure development.
