Ex-Miami Hurricanes Safety Avantae Williams Arrested for Fatal Shooting at Florida Bar
DeLand, FL — Avantae Williams, a former safety for the Miami Hurricanes, has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting at McCabe’s Bar over the weekend. The 24-year-old, who was regarded by ESPN as the top safety in the 2020 college football recruiting class, is facing charges of second-degree murder following the incident that occurred early Saturday morning.
Police reported that approximately 40 patrons were present when a fight broke out inside the bar, leading to gunfire. The victim, identified as 32-year-old Keshod Harris, was shot multiple times in the chest and later succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. Additionally, a bartender was injured, suffering gunshot wounds to both hands.
Witness accounts suggest that the altercation may have been sparked by jealousy involving Harris’s girlfriend. Following the shooting, Williams allegedly fled the scene around 1:30 a.m. He reportedly turned himself into authorities after a warrant for his arrest was issued.
Previously, Williams had a tumultuous career, leaving the Hurricanes after facing accusations of battering a pregnant woman. While those charges were eventually dropped, the incident raised significant concern. After transferring, he played just four games for the University of Maryland in the 2023 season.
Currently, Williams is held without bond at the Volusia County Jail in Daytona Beach. His arrest marks a troubling chapter in a once-promising football career now overshadowed by serious legal issues. The case continues to garner attention as further details emerge.
