Port of Ponce Welcomes Icon of the Seas: A New Era for Puerto Rican Tourism
Ponce, Puerto Rico – The Port of Ponce made history today by welcoming the Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship, marking its inaugural stop as a transit cruise ship in Puerto Rico. This momentous occasion is expected to significantly enhance the economy in the southern and western regions of the island.
Willianette Robles Cancel, the director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company (PRTC), was present to celebrate the arrival, emphasizing that this docking positions Puerto Rico as a premier destination in the Caribbean. To optimize the experience for passengers and crew alike, a comprehensive plan was developed in collaboration with the Port of Ponce Authority, the municipality of Ponce, and over 15 additional municipalities across the region.
In partnership with Royal Caribbean, the PRTC has curated a range of 15 onboard experiences, allowing guests to explore guided tours of Ponce’s historical landmarks, eco-and agrotourism facilities, culinary tastings, and cultural activities. Visitors will also have opportunities for shopping excursions and trips to natural attractions like beaches and caves.
To ensure a seamless experience, the Port has established several facilities, including a welcome center with reception tents, prepaid tour dispatch areas, promotional pavilions, and free shuttles to the town’s urban center. Additionally, exclusive transport options are available for crew members, along with cultural entertainment throughout the area.
Governor Jenniffer González Colón is expected to hold a press conference at 11:00 a.m. to participate in the welcome festivities for the Icon of the Seas, signaling a bright future for Puerto Rico’s tourism landscape.
