Uncertain Future for Maryland’s Rural Taxpayer Program Supporting Gender Identity

Federal Review Casts Uncertainty on Maryland’s True You Program

BALTIMORE (WBFF) – The federally funded True You Maryland program, aimed at addressing birth rates and sexually transmitted infections in six rural counties, faces an uncertain future amid a federal review. Since 2020, the Maryland Department of Health has received approximately $7 million from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for this initiative.

Internal training materials revealed that participating educators are encouraged to adopt a sex education curriculum focusing on gender identity, using inclusive language such as “people with vaginas” rather than “women.” The program aims to continue through 2028, according to recently obtained federal documents; however, HHS is currently reviewing compliance with legal and executive order mandates that restrict the promotion of varying gender identities.

Key phrases from training videos guided teachers against traditional gender terms, suggesting instead to refer to individuals based on anatomy. The Maryland Department of Health has not indicated any updates regarding True You’s federal funding, and several local school districts have distanced themselves from participation in the training sessions. As the review progresses, the future of the program remains in potential jeopardy.
