Maryland Parks: Reservations Needed for Swimming at Sandy Point and Other Locations

Headline: Maryland Parks to Implement Reservation System for Weekends and Holidays

Maryland’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has announced that Greenbrier State Park and Sandy Point State Park will require online reservations on weekends and holidays starting May 24. This initiative aims to enhance accessibility and improve visitor experiences, particularly as park visitation has surged, averaging 18.7 million annually from 2020 to 2024, compared to 10.8 million in the previous decade.

DNR Director Angela Crenshaw emphasized that the reservation system will help families plan their outings with less stress, ensuring enjoyable days in the state’s parks. The system will expand later this summer to include additional parks such as Point Lookout, Newtowne Neck, and North Point.

Visitors must reserve passes through the Maryland DNR website, starting May 19, with the option to modify or cancel reservations until 8 a.m. the day before their visit. The requirement aims to alleviate capacity-related closures that have frustrated visitors and caused traffic congestion. Upon arrival, visitors can check in using a QR code for a streamlined experience in the popular outdoor locations.
