Former Top High School Safety Avantae Williams Arrested for Second-Degree Murder

DeLand, Florida – Avantae Traeviyon Williams, a 24-year-old former football standout once hailed as the nation’s top safety out of high school, has been arrested on charges of second-degree murder following a fatal shooting at McCabe’s Bar in DeLand. The incident, which occurred early Saturday morning, May 3, 2023, began as a fistfight among several patrons before escalating when one individual drew a firearm.

Keshod Harris, 32, was shot multiple times and subsequently succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a local hospital. A bartender was also injured in the incident but survived after suffering gunshot wounds to both hands. Witnesses estimate around 40 people were present during the chaos.

Williams, who played defensive back for the University of Maryland Terrapins, fled the scene but was apprehended by detectives two days later, following an extensive manhunt. The DeLand Police Department confirmed that their investigators meticulously gathered witness accounts and collaborated with the State Attorney’s Office to secure a murder warrant for Williams.

During his high school career, Williams achieved significant accolades, being named a Sports Illustrated All-American and ranked among the top-50 players nationally. However, his collegiate path has faced challenges, including a dismissal from the University of Miami’s football team after a battery arrest.

The case is still under investigation, and authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the shooting to come forward. As the community processes the aftermath of this tragic event, local law enforcement remains committed to uncovering all details surrounding it.
