Family Claims ICE Detained Man with Clean Record at Framingham Gas Station

A 25-year-old Guatemalan man, Daniel Orellana, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on Monday morning at a Shell gas station in Framingham, Massachusetts, while en route to work. According to his father, Arquimedes Orellana, Daniel was wrongfully apprehended as he had no prior police or criminal record. During the arrest, ICE officials questioned Daniel about a person he claimed not to know, and despite his insistence, they took him into custody, confiscating his phone in the process.

Witnesses, including a gas station employee, confirmed the apprehension occurred at the station, and the family later found Daniel’s abandoned vehicle. After hours of searching, they received a call from Daniel informing them he was with ICE. His girlfriend, Zulema Alfaro, stated he described the situation as a misunderstanding, but ICE proceeded with his arrest.

The Orellana family emigrated from Guatemala three years prior to escape violence, and Daniel was nearing graduation with a law degree. His father expressed disappointment about his son’s treatment, acknowledging the government’s efforts to improve the country but arguing against the wrongful detention of innocent, productive citizens. The family is now being assisted by a lawyer and remains hopeful for Daniel’s swift release from an immigration detention center in Plymouth, as they believe the misunderstanding will soon be resolved. Telemundo Nueva Inglaterra has reached out to ICE for more information on the case but has yet to receive a response.
