Board of Public Works Greenlights Investments to Advance Thoroughbred Racing in Maryland – News Release

Governor Moore Unveils Plans for New Pimlico Race Course and Training Center

ANNAPOLIS, MD — In a significant move for Maryland’s thoroughbred racing industry, Governor Wes Moore and the Board of Public Works have approved a demolition package for Pimlico Race Course and the acquisition of Shamrock Farm, set to become the premier training hub for the state. “Today marks a pivotal step toward a reimagined Pimlico,” said Governor Moore, expressing gratitude to various stakeholders, including the Maryland Stadium Authority and local partners.

During the meeting, the Maryland Stadium Authority unveiled design concepts for the revamped Pimlico, slated to commence demolition and restoration after Preakness 150. Chair Craig Thompson stressed that this project represents more than just a racetrack; it aims to inject hundreds of millions into the Park Heights economy and create approximately 500 jobs, transforming the area into a year-round economic activity center.

Moreover, the $110 million investment for the new training facility at Shamrock Farm will offer 328 acres of premier training space, complete with a track akin to Pimlico’s and housing for backstretch workers. Carroll County officials expressed enthusiasm for the development, committing $1.5 million to support infrastructure costs, further cementing the area’s equestrian legacy.
