Virginia Surpasses Maryland as Residents Perceive It to Be Safer

Press Article: Public Safety Rankings Highlight Virginia Over Maryland

A recent study released by U.S. News and World Report reveals that public safety levels in Maryland and Virginia are comparable to much of the nation, yet significant differences persist. Virginia ranked 12th, far surpassing Maryland at 30th, indicating a notable safety disparity between the two neighboring states, just miles from Washington, D.C.

The study assessed crime rates, incarceration levels, and public perceptions of safety, factors that have increasingly drawn scrutiny in Maryland, particularly in light of high-profile homicide cases involving illegal immigrants. This issue has gained traction, notably during the Trump administration, as cases like those of Rachel Morin and Kayla Hamilton brought national attention to the state’s public safety challenges.

Interestingly, while the report did not include Washington, D.C., New Hampshire topped the list as the state with the highest public safety rating. The findings were derived from three years of surveys involving over 56,000 respondents. In terms of overall rankings, Utah led the "Best States" list, followed closely by New Hampshire, with public safety being a significant component of the evaluation. Louisiana, meanwhile, ranked at the bottom for public safety, raising concerns about crime and corrections in the state.
